Do plain facemasks really protect you from Coronavirus?

Most people have this question on their minds because of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Do plain facemasks keep you healthy and prevent Coronavirus from entering your body through respiration? In this article, we are going to answer this question from different perspectives.

Wear a Mask to keep the virus at bay
Plain face masks are the best way to curb the spread of viral disease. According to the best evidence available, if you are sick, you can protect others from getting sick by wearing a mask. This formula is applicable not just in the case of Coronavirus but for any other viral disease. Similarly, if you are around people infected with Coronavirus, you can protect yourself from the virus. However, keep in mind that these are plain facemasks made up of 2 ply breathable cotton lycra, so they are not 100% guaranteed to protect you against viral infections. As a law-abiding citizen, it is our duty to contribute the best we have in this global fight against Coronavirus. Wearing a mask will provide great support in preventing this virus from expanding to new territories.

Evolution of plain facemasks
By the end of 1800s, surgical masks became quite common for doctors to use in the operating rooms. Their popularity was sky-high at the beginning of 1918 during the influenza pandemic that took the life of over 50 million people over a course of 3 years. But they were pretty expensive and not accessible to common people so easily. That is when the idea of plain facemasks for common people began popularizing and soon, many companies introduced their own version of facemasks for protection against such deadly pandemics. The researchers found that plain facemasks reduced the emission of big viral droplets by 25 folds. However, plain facemasks are less effective when it comes to keeping away tiny viral droplets that stay in the air for hours.

These facemasks offer strong protection. If you’re traveling by road or via public transportation, meeting new peoples, or just visiting your aunt’s home, these masks can help you reduce the chances of spreading the disease but they are limited in capabilities. According to a survey conducted by Global Health advisory committee, if you put on a plain facemask, your likelihood of catching Coronavirus or any other viral infection goes down by 60%. However, this statement is valid only if you are in a home environment. When you step out of your house, you are likely to get in touch with an infected person and the protection level drops significantly. To stay safe outside your house, plain masks can save you from dust, pollution, airborne particles, etc.

Encouraging people to wear plain facemasks
However, the problem is that the majority of the population doesn’t wear a mask properly in order to protect themselves. For now, we don’t know how long this Coronavirus will stay in our life or how long it will take for Government to develop a vaccine, but there is one thing for sure, if we do not take precautionary measures seriously, we are likely to catch the infection at any point of time. These facemasks, whether plain one or surgical one with respirators are the only best ways to protect ourselves from this deadly virus.
